The musical At Seven helps children understand that career paths begin early, at about the age of seven years old. The educational package for At Seven is filled with activities that are geared to give students an awareness of what goes on around them. By having the chance to dissect various industries, they are exposed to many possibilities, one of which might later trigger a future vocation or career.
Written by Penni Rubin (a master teacher and educator for over 30 years), the activities in the educational curriculum outline a method of creative play and experiential learning that focuses pre-kindergarteners through nine year olds – 4 to 4th – on vocabulary and analytic thinking across a spectrum of areas. The activities are organized into schemas involving sciences, art, math, and music. They use the songs and concepts from the musical At Seven as jumping off points into the activities. Additional resources are used as well, including charts from a phenomenal activity book that Penni Rubin wrote with Dr. Eleanora Robbins (USGS, retired) called the What’s Under Your Feet Activity Book. An important aspect of the At Seven educational curriculum is that the activities are also tied into the California Frameworks Standards for English-Language Arts, Science, Visual and Performing Arts, and History-Social Studies.
